Education for Migrant Workers, Education for Members of Host Countries by Jose and Deborah Valencia and Angela Adams

A    Education for migrant workers

It is recommended that migrants be included in the educational programming of a host country so they may have:

- access to their own culture and language,

- access to the host culture and language,

- vocational training and skills,

- funding and support for these,

- the right to have a say in the organization of these.

 

B    Education for members of host countries

It is recommended that school education, at all levels, vocational training and adult education courses, include courses and discussions and awareness of issues having to do with:

racism, class, gender, able-bodiedness etc. in order to

 

1) acknowledge:

- the existence of different cultural values,

- the inherent richness in diversity,

- cultural diversity within a country's own non-immigrant population.

 

2) become more familiar with non-mainstream cultures and languages (Basques, Flemish, gypsies etc.)

 

and 3) to celebrate these.
