Ποιειν Και Πραττειν - create and do

Paula Meehan

Paula Meehan and Katerina Anghelaki Rooke in Milia 1995

Her contributions to the 'Myth of the City' begins with a letter in which she explains that it shall not be her first time to come to Crete. When still a student she came and learned the word for work 'doulia' just as she admired old women climbing up steep mountain sides as if they were goats. Her attitude towards cities can be put into a single phrase as being in need of not only tamed, but equally 'wild places': unkept, left to nature, where a biotop is created since man cannot intervene just like that plot of land which has become between houses and fences a no man's land in her Dublin.

Later Socrates Kabouropoulos would translate her poetry book 'Pillow Talk' into Greek and read one of the translated poems at the Kids' Guernica exhibition in Kastelli, Crete held in 2006 to indicate how traces are left by her.

Brendan Kennelly brought her with him as she was a former student of his at Trinity College, and she in turn brought with her Theo Dorgan, equally a poet and former director of Poetry Ireland.
