Guernica Youth as extension of Kids' Guernica

Girls who painted the Belfast peace mural

They did so with their teacher Cathal, and although Catholic, they consciously painted the Union Jack as a gesture towards the other side, the loyalists.

What alters when girls of that age wear uniforms? Some say it lowers the competition as to who is better dressed but then other nuances play a role e.g. hair style.

This photo was taken in Sept. 21, 2009. Life continues. Looking back to when they painted together the mural, what are they thinking now about this experience?

Bernard Conlon wishes to do a film in reference to this peace mural. It will be another explanation of the peace process in Northern Ireland.

 The youth of Costa Rico

The group of youngsters had a similar ideas as the youth in Ecouen when they painted a mural depicted heads of those who had received the Nobel Peace Prize.

An explanation given by their teacher was that Costa Rico has not known war or strife. Hence they were looking outward to see what is going on in the world. Like the youngsters in Dubai who painted consciously their mural in acknowledging their lives is one of being better off than many other youth in the Middle East.

What does contribute to altering relationships to fellow school mates is the experience which allows another discussion and which gives space to doing something together.

Police of Gent in dialogue with youth

How to face violence?

What about youth being criminalized due to taking a bus or streetcar without having a ticket? In Germany there is this aweful word: 'Leistungserschleicher' - someone who creeps into something to obtain services.

Gent is known for its positive integration policy and therefore has despite its large festivals less violent incidences per year when compared with other cities in Belgium.

Does the youth know how many policemen need special counselling and psychological support as they cannot cope all the time with what realities they are confronted by on a daily basis?

In philosophy, the police is an institutional set up but the youth has no institutional support, save some youth centres while most of the time they lack space where they could meet and unfold their own talents.

Poiein kai Prattein joined Kids' Guernica in 2005 and added the youth dimension.
