4th HERMES Symposium: Heritage and Media in Europe (2006)

Announcement for Final Conference

The 4th Symposium ‘Heritage and Media in Europe – Contributing towards Integration and Regional Development’ was at the same time the final conference of the Interreg IIIB CADSES project HERMES and held in Weimar, Germany on 5th-8th October 2006.
The project HERMES (‘Heritage and New Media for Sustainable Regional Devel-opment’) is a joint initiative of 16 institutions from eight countries co-operating under the leadership of the Classic Foundation Weimar. The project, which is part-financed by the European Union as part of the Community Initiative Interreg III B during 2004-2006, searches for innovative ways of revaluating and preserving cultural heritage by employing new media technologies. The overall aim is to make full use of the potential of cultural heritage as a factor for sustainable regional development (see www.swkk.de/hermes and www.heritage-radio.net for further information).

At the final conference of HERMES, the main activities and outcomes of the project will be presented and synthesised. Participants in the event will be all HERMES partners, experts from relevant academic and practical fields, as well as representatives of political institutions at various levels.

One of the central aims of the final conference will be to discuss and formulate policy recommendations to political decision-makers in cultural and structural policy. This applies in particular to the relationship between heritage (and culture in general) on the one hand, and regional development (in terms of cultural and economic growth) on the other. It will be asked how the relationship between these aspects can be actively shaped to their mutual benefit. Based on the experience gained within the Heritage Radio Network (HRN), one of the conference’s workshops will also aim to discuss possibilities and limitations of ‘mediating Europe’, i.e. media work in a transnational frameworkwith particular reference to cultural on-line journalism.

The format of the conference will comprise keynote speeches, individual presentations by project representatives as well as external experts, two parallel workshops, a panel discussion, and a ‘project brunch’ providing a forum for the discussion and preparation of possible future activities.

Registrations for participation in the conference can be submitted anytime (contact see below). A detailed registration form will be made available on the HERMES website soon. This will also provide information concerning accommodation in Weimar.
